March 2008 Women's Day Action - Focus on China To mark International Womens Day (8 March), and as part of International
PEN's China Camp ai gn to mark the Beijing Olympics in August 2008,
International PEN is focussing on the cases of three women writers
under threat in China – Zeng Jinyan, Tsering Woeser and Li
Jianhong. ·
Zeng Jinyan, wife of dissident writer, activist and PEN m ai n case Hu
Jia, is currenly under house arrest with her three-month-old baby daughter
at their apartment in Beijing. She has been under heavy surveillance since
early 2006 for her on-line writings. ·
Woeser is a leading and best-selling Tibetan-born writer, who has been
under severe harassment since her second book Notes on Tibet was
banned in China in September 2003. She lives in self-imposed exile in
Beijing, where she continues to publish her writings on-line and overseas. ·
Li Jianhong is a leading Shangh ai -based dissident writer, who has been
subject to intense police harassment since January 2005 for her critical
writings published online and peaceful dissident activities. She is a member
of Independent Chinese PEN Centre. International PEN’s Writers in Prison Committee will be calling
upon its members to use the background material attached to lobby the
Chinese authorities, protesting the restrictions imposed on Zeng Jinyan,
Tsering Woeser and Li Jianhong. Centres are also encouraged to
publicise these cases in their local press. The material attached is embargoed
for release on 4 March 2008. Cathy McCann Researcher, Asia/Middle East International PEN Writers in Prison Committee Brownlow House 50-51 High Holborn London WC1V 6ER. Tel.+44
